Hey all. Sorry about being silent over the last week or so. Been a little stressed about the not-having-a-job thing. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. Thanks to Adale I was able to celebrate my birthday in a haze of gluttony. She made me french toast for breakfast, made me a pizza for lunch, and then I nearly ate myself into a coma via a huge rack of ribs. Oh, I almost forgot that we got cake & ice cream afterwards.

Because I've felt overwhelmed by the job application process I can't really remember any interesting things that have happened in the last week or so, but maybe they'll come to me later (and by that I mean Adale will remind me).

I'll have some pictures up later today of the "cash bash" fundraiser we went to with Adale's mom, held at a firehall out where her parents live.

Cat playing the Theramin

Wednesday, April 09, 2008

I'm super excited - we're going to see Dale Watson tonight!! I also applied for two more jobs this week - one managing archaeological collections for the State of TX and the other as a fundraiser for UT.

Adale found out yesterday that she has an on campus interview at Temple in Philly!!!

Other than Mr. Peaches having trouble barfing up a hairball (he's been trying to hack it up for 4 or 5 days now) things are going fairly smoothly.

Wilbur the Cat
JOE'S HERO?

To deal with obnoxious students who text message during his class, Syracuse University prof Laurence Thomas has a strict policy: If he catches a student doing it, he will end the class immediately and walk out. He’s been making good on his playbook, staging brazen walk outs on his own course after catching students SMSing.

To Thomas, it’s a matter of respect; students need to show some.

So when he caught a student in the front row of a large lecture hall sending a “where r u?” last week, he up and left, and then sent students, the chancellor, and his dean an email about the incident, where he noted the offending student is Cuban and that last year, two Latino students started a game of tic-tac-toe during his class.

USA #1!!!!!!!!!

This strapping young man is Ms. Tammy Thomas, Olympic cyclist and recently convicted steroid user. When a drug tester for the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency showed up to get a urine sample from her, he said that she appeared to have shaving cream around her ear. Why would she have shaving cream around her ear? Apparently she developed a number of tell-tale symptoms of big-time steroid use, such as:

• A deep voice
• Baldness
• A full beard
• Chest hair

Now that's the Olympic Spirit!!

BLOG IMPROVEMENTS

I've added a new feature to On the Couch n'at that should greatly enhance your enjoyment of the website. If you look underneath my profile you'll see the words UFO and bigfoot, and then several news stories. This is the new "Action News Center" part of the blog and will provide my dear readers with up-to-the-minute updates on the latest ufology and bigfoot news. Clicking on the links will open up new windows, and by clicking on "bigfoot" you switch to the bigfoot stories. I am taking suggestions for additional topics to be included in the "Action News Center".

Just think, the next time you're reading On the Couch n'at you won't worry about missing breaking ufology or bigfoot news stories because they'll be right there at your fingertips.

Well check this out - someone from Indianapolis, Indiana did a google search for "Chilis Bar and Bites Charlotte, NC" and guess what was the #1 first website that comes up for that search? I'll let you try the search yourself, but I would like to say that my E*Business strategies are beginning to blossom. Like the big boys always say, it's all about content, baby.

DATELINE: My Couch

To be honest the transition from high-powered executive to unemployed, pajama-clad lounge-a-bout has not been easy. Adale hasn't once set up a breakfast buffet. I miss the executive lounge at the airport and must set up a time to go hang out there. One day you get to board the flight before everyone else and the next you have a box full of cat shit to empty out.

Don't get me wrong, there are perks to being a man of leisure. I have a slew of Italian Zombie and Cannibal movies on my Netflix queue that I'm finally getting the chance to watch. Mr. Peaches & I are spending a lot of quality time together. And of course it just feels right to be lounging around the apartment in my pj's with Adale.

I do have fun, like watching this video where a guy raps about his cat. He's an inspiration. I feel like I should use this opportunity to take up a hobby but I haven't decided yet. Dale Watson is coming next Wednesday which will be totally awesome (hey Kristen, he's in Baltimore Monday 4/7 at Dangerously Delicious Pies!!).

I hope everybody had a good April Fool's Day. I was trying to think about it and I don't think I've ever pulled off a good prank for April Fool's. When I was in high school my brother, who was in middle school, put Vasoline on all the toilet seats at our house & I sat on one. Any of you ever pull off a good prank?

I'm thinking about changing the focus of On the Couch n'at to pictures like these.

DATELINE: My Couch

Hey everybody,

I hope y'all had some good times over the weekend. We were in TCB mode, organizing closets, taking out all of the recycling, doing lots of laundry. We also managed to go for a few walks on Sunday because the weather was so nice. I'm glad I didn't get booed while throwing out the first pitch of a baseball game like W did.

I just found out one of the jobs I was going to apply for in Austin has been filled. Lame. I've got another one down there that I'm getting everything together for right now.

Did you see this NY Post article on the Jackson Family? They are in bad straights (no pun intended). No money, no jobs. Michael hates his family and over the years has refused to help them. Marlon, for example, lives in San Diego, where he works stocking groceries at a Vons supermarket, lost his home to foreclosure & lives with his wife in an Extended Stay America hotel. In case you don't know, Extended Stay is not a executive approved hotel.

Hey Y'all,

What's up? I've been trying to get another job application out (meaning re-working my resume & job letter). Did I mention that I hate writing job letters?

Did you see the new studies about the RFK assassination? The official story of his killing is, if you can believe it, even more unbelievable than the official story of the assassination of his brother JFK. For years it's been known that the official autopsy of RFK stated that the bullets entered RFK from behind, including on at point blank range behind his ear, while every eye witness puts the so-called assassin Sirhan Sirhan 2-5 feet in front of RFK!

Another glaring problem from the official story is that although Sirhan Sirhan's revolver only holds 8 bullets and he did not re-load (he was tackled almost immediately after RFK was shot) , it appears that more than 8 bullets were fired (from bullet holes in the room and bullet wounds to bystanders) even though the police concluded that no other person fired a weapon other than Sirhan Sirhan.

The new studies are conformation's of these long standing problems in the official story. The studies are part of a new book by lawyer/former municipal judge/past President of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and a dude who is an expert in the forensic study of audio recordings. The lawyer/forensic science guy looks at the autopsy report & concludes the shots have to have come from behind RFK - nothing new - but the exciting part if the study of a newly discovered audio recording of the assassination. A freelance reporter unknowingly made a recording of the assassination that was recently discovered & put through new high-tech analyses that argue for 10+ shots during the assassination, including several that were fired so close together that they could not have been fired from the same gun.

If you're interested, here are some more detailed articles on the assassination.

Anyhooters, not much exciting is going on. We might go bowling this weekend.

I found the picture above on Boing Boing, and Joe, god love his pervert soul, sent me the picture below. He says, "it reminded me of an image I scooped up a few years ago. I think it's from an essay on sex killers in the mid-20th c.; about how media whipped up hysteria" and adds "Jack is a coward."

Maybe by re-visiting the Ethics of Sinistar we can accept what role this all-powerful evil could play in our lives. From The Philosophical Revelations of Sinistar:

One of the great, unrecognized, philosophical geniuses of this century or any other is a figure known by some as Sinistar. Sinistar left behind a legacy of seven phrases that encompass his minimalist philosophy. We are fortunate enough to have with us audio records of what he said, so that we may greater comprehend his intent.
Sinistar will always be an enigma, as nothing is known of his life. It seems as if he lived a life filled with motivation and direction, as if desperately yearning to accomplish all that he could, before he could be brought low by those who would destroy him. Sinistar's revelations follow, with an interpretation of their intent.
1. I am Sinistar. Here, Sinistar clearly makes two ideas known. First, that he exists; he is aware and he thinks. The second is that he has a singular identity. He is unique, and, in a sense, alone. Some have argued that this may imply a sense of self-determination, but Sinistar's perspective on the free will debate is unknown. I believe that, with what little is known about his life, Sinistar would be a determinist. People are destined to act out their lives guided by the hand of another force. The rest of us are mere automatons, carrying out algorithms.

DATELINE: My Couch, Pittsburgh , PA

As some of you may have already guessed, there have been some major changes at Business n'at HQ that have caused a slow down in blog posts. The big news is that I got shit-canned from my job and am now unemployed. My big adventure in executive realness is over.

The good news is that I don't have to kill myself anymore from traveling and the stress - hopefully the hives will go away, I should be able to cut my daily Tums intake down from 10-20, and I will be able to slowly recover from all those horrible meals on the road - I can spend more time with Adale, the cats, and my tv, and it should open up new opportunities for developing a much more thoughtful and strategically planned Netflix queue.

The bad news is that I don't have a job.

In addition to watching Jackie Chan's 1985 classic Police Story, I am applying for jobs in Pittsburgh as well as a town near you.

DATELINE: Baltimore, MD

I'm packing up & driving home in about an hour. It's been a good week that's gone pretty quickly. I got to meet up with Kristen & my friend Dan (from the Bingo anthro department). Kristen & I met at a fancy pizza place in the parking lot of some random mall. Dan & I went to a bar near his apartment and as we were walking in I realized it was across the street from the cake shop on the "Ace of Cakes" show. I peeked in the window & saw a slightly larger-than-life sized human spine cake. Very exciting.

Because I was driving around outside of downtown Baltimore I didn't see any other interesting sights, except for a soul food restaurant that advertised Pigs Feet, Hogs Maws, and Chittlin's. Yuck.

I want to thank everyone who sent notes or I talked too after we took Mr. Droolface to the big tuna fish buffet in the sky. Your thoughts helped me so much in dealing with the loss of Droolsy, aka ODB, aka Brian, aka Big Baby Jesus, aka Sir Stinks-a-lot, aka Old Man Kitty, aka Yellie.

DATELINE: Charm City, USA

I'm in Baltimore for just one week and am looking forward to a week of filth. This should be a good week for a number of reasons, including:
  • I'm driving a Chrysler 300. To give you an idea of the status this car provides, at the Taco Bell drive-through yesterday the gal at the window said "nice riiiiiide!" and gave me a few extra hot sauces.
  • I'm staying at a nicer hotel than normal, a Raddison. Why is that special? Three words - Sleep Number Bed.
  • I'll be able to see Kristen, my friend Dan from grad school, and maybe a few of Adale's former students.
  • Crabs!

R.I.P Mr. Droolface

Adale and I took Mr. Droolface to the vet and had him put to sleep this afternoon. He's been pretty sickly for few years and recently took a turn for the worse, with his hips and/or legs making it difficult for him to walk or even get comfortable lying down. This is something we've been talking about for several months but with his leg problems it seemed like it was time. I don't know what else to say...it's really sad not having him around...usually at this time of night he would be sleeping & purring on top of me while I lie on the couch. He was cranky, whiny, and usually smelled bad, but I loved the little guy. He curled up with me when I was alone in Binghamton after my marriage ended and has been with me ever since.

DATELINE: Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport

As I was walking through the airport on the way to the rental car shuttle I noticed this fancy bank of vending machines.

I was looking through my pockets for change to buy a pop when I smelled hot dogs. After looking around for a hot dog cart I finally realized that the scrumptious smell was coming from a hot dog vending machine!! This is next level shit. Pittsburgh doesn't have one. I feel good about our future.

DATELINE: My couch at home

Sorry I've been a little light on posting. I've been reworking my resume because Senator Larry Craig is taking applications for interns.

I've been home with no a lot of work to do, which has been nice because I needed a break. My hives have calmed down 90 percent or more (although they did pop up last night). We went to gay bingo last weekend. It was pretty fun even though I didn't win anything. I kind of got the bingo bug and may start hitting the local churches. Winning $$ and snackbars are a winning combination in my book.

The big news is that Adale found out in 24 hours between late Sunday night and Monday afternoon that she has 3 interviews for academic jobs!! She is a rock star.

It's pretty cold here with some snow flurries and doesn't make me want to leave the house. I'll try to write something else later on tonight. Chau.

DATELINE: Chili's Bar & Bites, Charlotte/Douglas International Airport Charlotte, NC

I had a quick trip to Dallas this week (Wed & Thurs) and am awaiting my flight home, having to switch planes in Charlotte. My flight out of Charlotte is delayed and I've taken the opportunity to have a few beers and fajitas at Chili's. I had very disappointing fajitas last night in Dallas and knew that Chili's would address my need for tasty fajitas. I was disappointed because the peppers & onions are frozen, but overall I would give them a B-, while last night's fajitas at Tio Joe's got a C.

I'v got to finish my beer & roll out to the gate, but this is kind of weird. I can see who comes to Business n'at (their ip address, city, state) and how they got there. In addition to my loyal readers who have Business n'at as their homepage I thin the number #1 search term that brings people here relate to the whole Brandi M / Purely Pamela / Rock of Love businesses. Tonight I noticed a weird one - someone from Omaha, Nebraska was searching for "hives while talking on the phone" and ended up here. I can't imagine what they were looking for. Do phone lines or cell phones cause hives? Is it a fetish? Maybe there's a movie scene where someone breaks out with hives on the phone. Beats me.

HOTEL REVIEW: Best Western Eastern Shore Inn Exmore, VA

Two Stars (out of Five)

Overall this was a pretty low-rent place. Sure I had cable tv and the internets, but the pillows were flat & the sheets were old. Sometimes the cleaning people didn't empty out, let alone wash my little coffee pot. The people who worked there were very nice & helpful, and since the hotel was only 20 percent full they took care of me as much as they could. I think I can best express myself through a haiku...

lukewarm, stale,the sheets are rough

HIVES!

This is what I was plagued with last Saturday. Looks bad, huh?

DATELINE: Eastern Shore, Virginia

I'm back in VA and rolling through my second week of interviews. The weekend in Pittsburgh was nice except for the extreme hives attack on Saturday. Adale and I went out to some junk stores and my face started to itch & the bumps began to show up. It wasn't long before I looked pretty fucked up but I had planned on going to the doctor later in the day I didn't worry about it. It finally was too much and we went to the doctor where I realized that the hives were out of control.

Saturday was a little chilly so while we were running around I was bundled up, but when I got into the examining room I took my jacket & sweater off & saw that the bumps were all over my face & the parts of my neck & shoulder exposed by my t-shirt. I took my shirt off and Jesus Christ if I wasn't covered completely in red welts...I took my pants off and I was covered head to toe. I got a little hyped up while talking to the doctor because I was a little worried that these things wouldn't go away before I left the next day for a week of travel, or if they did go away they would show up Monday or Tuesday.

The doctor gave me three shots and a mess of new pills. Thank god the bumps were gone by Sunday morning. I'll have to ask Adale to send some of the pictures she took with her phone

I don't what caused them. They're doing allergy tests on my blood to find out but I am a tiny bit worried that it'll be something I don't want to quit eating, like tomatoes (no pizza!) or wheat (no Wheat Thins!) . The hives started my second week in Maryland (I think) and the weekend before that second week I had some octopus, so maybe it's seafood. An allergy to seafood wouldn't be the worst thing, not like an allergy to pizza or beer or donuts.

A few bumps came back tonight on my face but not too bad. Hopefully thees new steroids & anti-histamines will take care of them.

Until tomorrow bitches.

RE: Your Brains

When I first heard this song I got the same feeling I had when I first heard The Muffs and The Old 97's.
BH 90210 / Saved By The Bell GOSSIP DISCUSSION

The most difficult part, for me, of trying to come up with a definitive solution to this blind item is that I really enjoy imagining all of the possible actors in the various roles in the story. I definitely hear what Joe is saying about Ian - he is sweaty and I'm not altogether convinced that the party frat guy character of Steve is a pure creation of his acting skills. And he did marry that Playboy centerfold.

But I have to go with my deep understanding of both shows and suggest Brian Austin Green was the male 90210 actor snorting all the coke & macking with the SBTB hottie. At first I thought he would have been too young - he played a freshman in the first season and looked the part - and agreed with Allison that it must have been Jason Priestly, but then I checked Wikipedia and Brian was 16/17 when that first season was being filmed. I knew he dated Tiffani-Amber Thiessen of SBTB and 90210 fame but because I thought he was so young when BH started I didn't think they were the coked-up couple getting down UNTIL I read this passage on Tiffani-Amber Thiessen's Wiki page:

During her Saved By The Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210 career she dated actor Brian Austin Green for about 7 years. They used to live together.

Thus, Tiffani has to be the SBTB hottie in the story. She was still on SBTB at the time and was also dating Brain at the time. And I agree with the Blind Item that she's hot.

When I thought Jason Priestly was the 90210 guy, my guess for the 90210 gal hoovering up the coke without as much as a thank you was Shannon Dougherty. She was young, was and has seemed very selfish, and often displays exactly the diva-type behavior described in the story. It also makes sense that she was hanging out with Jason - she was pretty much the female lead of the show & Jason's tv brother. However, since I know don't think Jason was involved the field is opened up. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Jennie Garth (AKA Kelly Taylor) - she was the "glamorous" teen girl on the show and was always much thinner than Shannon (from a big coke habit?).

I do have to add that if you ever, ever get the chance to see Morris Day and the Time, do it. I saw them in Milwaukee a few years ago (got in free & went backstage to hang with Morris & Jerome thanks to Juan Carlos' love of BBQ & his lovable and gregarious nature) and they were incredible. I remember thinking, and still believe, that if I could be anyone I might choose Morris Day. He's the coolest, smoothest, most fly cat ever created on god's green earth. I am 100 percent serious that if I could pull off wearing the amazing outfits he wears I would in a heartbeat.

Saturday, January 26, 2008

I really don't like having Hives. I've got 'em on my arms, hands, legs, chest, shoulder, butt and they are so goddamn itchy. I also look like hell, like I've got Ebola or some other horrible and contagious disease. I'm getting a shot tomorrow that should take of them.

The Unbearable Whiteness of Being (Mitt)

MOST AWESOME BEVERLY HILLS 90210 / SAVED BY THE BELL GOSSIP

I don't want to influence your reading of this blind item so write in with your guesses & then I'll post mine.

So a little change of pace. After I saw that The Time was going to play the Grammy Awards it got me thinking about a time when I was just starting out. I used to promote concerts to get through school. This was when little guys still could do it and corporations had not swallowed up every possible venue. I had promoted The Time two or three times and made some money. I had got to know some of the group and once we happened to be in Las Vegas at the same time. They invited me to their show and to a party they were having after. I want to say they were playing at the Riviera, but I can't remember. I think it was because this was when Frank Sinatra was still alive and I remember thinking I had seen him play in the same room a week earlier and how crazy Vegas is that two totally different acts can both pack in a crowd. Of course Sinatra tickets were three times the price of The Time tickets.

Anyway, after the show, we went to a club or two, but this was still the older Vegas. Excalibur was the only big new hotel. Everything else was still to come. The clubs were still very rough around the edges. Very rough. So, after seeing a possible stabbing death at the second club we went to, we decided to head back to the hotel and one of their suites. I don't remember anyone calling anyone but all of a sudden the place was absolutely packed. Packed like it took you five full minutes to make your way across the room from one side to the other.

There was one clear area though and it was this big glass table. It was probably seven feet long and three feet wide. Sitting around the table were people basically two deep. The top of the table was covered in coke. I had seen people do coke before and thought I had seen a lot on a table before, but this was the most ever. None of the guys from The Time were touching it. I do remember that. BUT, I do remember that there were two people from this brand new television show called Beverly Hills 90210 who were sucking coke down like someone was trying to steal it from them. Most people were being very patient and chatting in between lines. Not these two. One female and one male were all over it. They were outdone in their zest for the drug only by this actress from Saved By The Bell. I honestly thought they were going to fight for it. Later, after the crowd had thinned I saw the male from 90210 and the actress from Saved By The Bell getting it on in a corner. She was pretty hot, I have to tell you. The guy I remember was very sweaty. The actress from 90210 never left the coke. Ever. Not until it was all gone. Then she got up, and left. Didn't say goodbye or anything. Just walked out and left. Hell of a night.
I'm deep in the weeds writing a report. I also came down with a case of the Hives...they actually started over a week ago when I was in DC/MD but have continued to plague me. For most of that time they were popping up at night and staying pretty calm during the day, but right now they're driving me bonkers. I actually woke up at 4:30 am this morning scratching like a mf and couldn't go back to sleep. I'll take some pictures before I go get a cortisone shot to take care of them. Lots of red, super itchy bumps on my hands, arms, legs, head, stomach...

In the meantime you should check out Art Garunkel's website - he's listed every book he has read over the last 29 years, organized by month read & listing the author, date published, and number of pages. I'm not done going through them all (1000+) but it seems like he's really neglected to keep abreast of the worldwide UFO cover-up.

My last project was outside of DC & was uneventful EXCEPT that Adale came down & we got to hang out with Bern & Kristin. We went to a fancy shmancy Mediterranean restaurant and had one of the best meals I've had in a long time and then went to out to a tasty brunch the next day.

The Hampton Inn was subpar - the room was small, no microwave, I had to request a fridge, and I didn't even get the bottled water/snack chips due to me in honor of my Diamond Status with Hilton Honors. And to add injury to insult the afternoon cookies were oatmeal raisin/cranberry for an entire week, and then they switched to peanut butter!!! Every other Hampton switches cookies daily AND there's a preponderance of chocolate chip in the mix.

Let me introduce myself. I am your consultant and I am ready to rock your world. I can be charming or I can bring the pain - whatever it takes to help you achieve your goals. Is this candy dish for everybody? Great! Yes, I'm staying at the Hampton Inn by the interstate, and yes, it is lovely. We should meet at the breakfast buffet someday to talk about strategic initiatives and donor-centered fundraising. Let's make it Thursday because that's when they serve the breakfast pizzas...you'll love them. Now let's get down to business - where's the first elderly lady you want me to shmooze?

I think I read an article where Gloria Steinem unpacked the dream of a certain segment of men to rescue Marilyn monroe, to save her from her demons. I always imagined that a similar desire was stimulated by the suicide of Kurt Cobain & I think I can feel it in regards to Britney, with the exception that I really believe I could turn her life around:

When Britney and Adnan stumbled out, Britney mumbled something unintelligible. "I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She was slurring and spitting, and talking with a British accent," says the employee. "Her face was covered with cold sores and acne, and her scalp was patchy. I wanted to help her, but she was so mean that I left her alone.

"Then she muttered, 'F--- you!' and left the store."

Evolution is an amazing and wondrous process and I am comforted that this recent discovery will help us understand the disparate mating rituals developing in male homo sapiens at universities across the world.

Well, I am the worst blogger in the world. I decided to stop writing for a few days in December when I got really busy, then I got busier, then I went to Florida for Xmas, then I went to Dallas for a staff conference, and now in Germantown, MD about 1/2 hour north of DC.

I'm going to ease back into writing & it might take a week or so to get back into the swing of things. In the meantime, can you believe how much Beyonce looks like Zombie Beyonce here?
